| Tue, May 07 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Registration closed | Your Resume Today (Topic - West, Kevin E.) TAN Members Yes, there actually is a proper format to an actor Commercial or Theatrical resume. However, we’re now in an entirely new world with regards to technology. So now you have to mix in just what the value of the resume is, how it is reviewed etc. Too often casting and agents complain at the lack of structure in a resume. There IS a proper format to the categories and credits themselves that are the foundation to such things as design and appearance options. Make your resume both informational through proper format and yet customize your look to stand out. Also, learn ways to have your resume create a stronger perception without false padding or lying, which can wind up being worse than nothing. |
| Tue, May 07 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM Registration closed | Ron Underwood (Director - TV) TAN Members Ron Underwood made his directorial debut in the world of entertainment in children’s television. Underwood received an Emmy nomination and a Peabody Award for his two part ABC Weekend Special, based on the novel by Beverly Cleary, “The Mouse and the Motorcycle.” He made the transition to feature films in 1990 with the science fiction comedy, “Tremors.” The film, which starred Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross and Reba McEntire, became a sleeper hit and a cult classic. Underwood followed that success with the blockbuster comedy, “City Slickers,” starring Billy Crystal and Jack Palance. One of the year’s top grossing films, “City Slickers” earned Palance an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He then directed Michael Keaton and Geena Davis in the political romantic comedy, “Speechless.” Next came the Disney film, “Mighty Joe Young,” starring Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton. It received an Academy Award nomination for Visual Effects. His most recent feature was Usher’s starring debut, “In The Mix” for Lions Gate and Fox Films.
Underwood has also made films for the small screen. His Showtime film, “Stealing Sinatra,” was the true-life story of the kidnapping of Frank Sinatra, Jr. starring David Arquette and William H. Macy. Macy was nominated for an Emmy for his role as one of the inept kidnappers. Underwood’s Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation on CBS, “Back When We Were Grownups,” was based on the Anne Tyler novel of the same name. After having cast music videos for Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Outkast, Madonna, Dwight Yoakum, Metallica, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Black Eyed Peas, Casting Director Tracy “Twinkie” Byrd has set her sights on Feature Films. And today, she is NOTORIOUS, bringing such talent as Jamal Woolard as Notorious B.I.G., Angela Basset, Derek Luke, Anthony Mackie to the Big Screen in the Fox Searchlight film “NOTORIOUS”. But if you ask Twinkie, she’ll tell you its ALL casting. Whether populating commercials, music videos, TV series or feature films, Twinkie is all about finding the right fit to every role. And her passion for talent is only paralleled by her passion for life. From her first gig scouting dancers for Def Comedy Jam in New York, Twinkie “Just did it”. She went on to cast music videos for Brett Ratner and then hit Los Angeles to learn from commercial casting goddess Megan Foley. Without so much as a local phone, Twinkie found a way to book sessions using the payphone down the block from her brothers’ couch (where she crashed for her first three months in LA). Once she got her own place (with no heat, a borrowed mattress and a cooler for a fridge), she would continue the pager-payphone dance and only rent a car when she needed one to get to the casting sessions. Why she consistently delivers?? Easy!! “I can always tell the ones who are going to draw the director in. They are locking in on the camera and hypnotizing.” That goes for commercials, music videos, TV and Film!! “I’ve been telling dancers for a long time to get their acting chops together, Stop buying big cars and foolishness and put money into their craft”. That advice paid off for many actors who made it through the final cast list for “Stomp The Yard”, the biopic of Brooklyn’s son “Notorious B.I.G”, “The Blind Side” & “Stomp The Yard 2” While some may dismiss the value in projects like commercials and music videos, Twinkie has kept her energy focused on the truth: TALENT IS TALENT. Anyone who has watched Twinkie work knows true talent, passion, and bliss for life itself. It’s why she’s been on the casting scene for over a decade and is still going strong as the FIRST casting director to make the leap from casting music videos to casting principals in major motion pictures!!! | Thu, May 16 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Registration closed | Pursue v. Accept (Topic - West, Kevin E.) TAN Members This discussion is actually the core foundation of why Kevin created and continued The Actors’ Network. When you begin to get completely PRESENT with the difference between what you accept as an actor versus what you pursue, a HUGE weight will be lifted. When you naturally and simply let things go because they’re outside of your “focused pursuit” Hollywood becomes a more manageable place and your career more within your grasp. Because we’re constantly inundated with what are considered career-oriented TIPS or projects or possibilities we easily fall into the TRAP of just “accepting it.” The question is are you going to just continue to judge your destiny by what you’re willing to accept or by what you truly wish to PURSUE.
This could be representation, something in a trade, an audition you heard about, or the place where you can find a filmmaker and talk to them. The reality is there are lots of choices on what you desire versus what you’re offered. When you’re clear on WHY, then you’ll be more involved and care more about the result of your efforts. We claim we don’t know what to do or are not sure if we’re allowed to do blah blah…but is that really the issue? We know that the general belief amongst actors is a fear of rejection, which is what leads to slowly settling back into accepting whatever is the path of the least resistance or not really having a direction…so your career meanders aimlessly for years.
You’ll find that you’re far less worried about bothering or upsetting a professional person if what you’re going after …is truly in your professional heart to create progress. The line that exists between being pushy and being professional when promoting your career, requesting a meeting, asking for career help, looking for an agent, getting a general with a casting director, or just wanting to get career advice we feel lies within your CORE REASON for wanting to pursue it. Learn how to define and remain clear over the years of your career regarding the difference between pursuing versus acceptance so that you can become more effective in your career and even social pursuits. Playing small or shrinking into the proverbial corner of your career will not help you unless you have tremendous representation. Additionally there are dozens and dozens of opportunities out there for you and moments when asking the right thing at the right time or not mentioning something is the way to be pushy, but only if you’re unclear within yourself on WHY. Actors tend to have little patience and try to push for everything at the moment because the situation, project or circumstance is just “there” or available, instead of a specific moment created by pursuit. |

Simultaneously, Jeremy, along with Joe Dain, started Shoot Productions. Together they quickly racked up numerous credits on films such as “The Gingerdead Man” starring Gary Busey, “The Cutter’s Club” starring Tony Todd and “Petrified” starring Roark Critchlow, among many others. He is the creator of the Facebook group, Casting Directors for Actors, which currently has over 25,000 worldwide members and exists to bridge the gap between Actors and Casting Directors. The group has gained attention from industry professionals all over the world and you can find many casting calls for studio films and network TV shows on his group’s page. As Jeremy is deeply passionate about people working together instead of against each other and making this business a bit friendlier, he also started a blog called, “Dial In With Jeremy Gordon” where he talks about the business and life and being rooted to both (the Podcast version is coming soon). With all Jeremy has on his plate, he continues to work on feature films and TV shows. Some of his favorite recent credits include: “V” - the pilot for WB/ABC, starring Morena Baccarin, Elizabeth Mitchell, Scott Wolf, Joel Gretsch and Morris Chestnut, which premiered in the fall of 2009 to nearly 14 million viewers, the feature film, “Devolved”, starring Chris Kattan, Robert Adamson, Lindsey Shaw & Gary Entin, the indie comedy “Spork” starring Keith David, Beth Grant, Richard Riehle, Yeardley Smith, Elaine Hendrix and Chad Allen, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2010 and won one of their Best Feature awards and is still playing in festivals around the world and will be on the big screen this summer. One of his recent short films, “Relish” premiered at the Phoenix Comicon last May where it won 2 awards, Audience Choice Award and Best Superhero Movie. In December 2010, Jeremy completed casting for the Cameron Crowe/Matt Damon film for 20th Century Fox called, “We Bought A Zoo”. Most recently he completed casting on Sony’s “Think Like A Man” based on Steve Harvey’s NY Times best selling book. Coming up next - an indie comedy, “F+” and a film by Oscar winning director, John G Avildsen, called, “ME” as well as a new web series, “Casual Encounters”. Currently Jeremy is casting the new Chuck Palahniuk film (author of “The Fight Club” and “Choke”), called “Snuff” produced by Golan Ramras. Jeremy is an actor’s Casting Director. He loves actors, he loves the rehearsal process and he loves working with actors in pre-reads. He regards actors in the highest light. “Without smart, professional, and talented actors, where would I be as a Casting Director? So anything I can do to help move towards the end goal…..I’m all for it.” |

This is a rare moment at TAN, but we truly have found a way for you to “help your career and help yourself” at the same dang time. We have been in and around this city for years. We’ve seen every possible MLM (multi-level marketing) company that has come and gone. We typically do not endorse such things, but in this case...we just HAVE to. Send Out Cards is a company. You can buy its service, which is in DIRECT line with the TAN philosophy of odd-size marketing for yourself, as well as potentially choosing to make it a business and have a new form of income. Send Out Cards - Building Relationships & Create A Business...One Card At A Time!!
The SOC sign-up is facilitated by TAN Lifer, Peter Bedard, who is an actor and producer who discovered Send Out Cards through a friend who was writing on the George Lopez show. Send Out Cards (SOC) turned out, after hearing Kevin’s philosophy on actor-marketing, to be the perfect way to implement the TAN philosophy, build relationships and create a "fan" base. Peter will show you how to create an actor card online which is then mailed (HARD COPY) to his target list as an odd sized mailer through the USPS. SOC has a full data base, custom design card program, calendar system, gift giving system (when was the last time you sent brownies to your favorite casting director?), and the cards are printed in your handwriting font with your signature. SOC prints, addresses, stamps, licks, and mails the cards for you. Imagine doing a target list campaign mailer in 20 seconds totally customized and personalized! We will only be able to accommodate non-TAN friends of yours if the room isn’t full. So feel free to add a name or two to your EMAILED reservation, BUT if you do not hear from us confirming them...then the reservation will only be for you. IF YOU GOT THE TIME DON’T MISS THIS!! |

| Wed, May 22 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM | Agent v. Manager (Topic - West, Kevin E.) TAN Members For more than 50 years in Hollywood the question has always been Agent, PLUS a manager if/when/why or why not? Or a Manager then ADD an agent if/when/why or why not? It has never been Agent VERSUS Manager. But since the turn of the 21st century this has become the question and we strongly recommend that if you’re a long time actor or a brand new actor...you need to not miss this conversation, because it can cost you months and years of your career not to mention what it does to your psyche. |

The Rep Relationship: Getting a rep meeting may not be that hard, even getting an agent or manager to “take you on” may not be that hard, but how do you manage the relationship…to make it an effective long term career value? Good question.
For more than 50 years in Hollywood the question has always been: Agent plus a manager - if/when/why, or why not? Or: a Manager then ADD an agent - if/when/why, or why not? It has never been: Agent VERSUS Manager. But today this is a more valid question. Whether a veteran actor or a fairly new actor, this professional scenario and question, if not handled properly each time it comes up in YOUR career, can cost you months and years of your career, not to mention your psyche. |

Veteran working actor and Founder of The Actors’ Network, Kevin has pioneered many philosophies, now commonly used in Hollywood. Come increase your odds of success at this Non-member public presentation, as well as asking Kevin questions on the subject:
Demo Material Creation: In today’s Hollywood it is THE ONE thing that can alter your career…for better…or worse, and there is FAR more to it than we think.
Just 15 years ago, getting “moving picture” material to be professionally considered as “Demo Material” was difficult. Today it has become so easy, that we’ve lost perspective on what can really help us vs. literally destroy an Agent, Manager, or Casting Director’s belief and trust in us as an actor. Remember: “just because it is possible doesn’t make it a good idea.” No truer words have been spoken about the professional dangers of the technological ability to create demo material easily. Tragically we count on “projects we book” to provide us with the clips we need and/or now we pay HUGE dollars to a company to “do it for us” without having enough creative control to get what we need. A lot of actors have learned this and so they turn to their OWN efforts. But what makes “what you shoot” work and why is literally the most important question you need to answer. Come learn how to ensure that your MATERIAL choices, and SHOOT work for you! |
