They are all created wholly or in part through motion capture. Just two years ago, two of the three films nominated for the Best Animated Feature Academy Award, MONSTER HOUSE and Oscar winner HAPPY FEET were motion capture films. So, what exactly is motion capture? Join us for this panel discussion and Q&A with some of the leading experts in the field. Find out about the process first hand from actors, casting directors, video game producers and directors, and the people who helped to create the technology now used the world over by film, commercial, and game studios, the medical community, and even the U.S. military. How does motion capture work? What is the difference between motion and performance capture? Where is this technology leading the industry and will it replace the need for flesh and blood actors? How does one break in to this field and what are the skills necessary? How is SAG dealing with the issues of contracts, jurisdiction, and residuals with regard to this emerging technology? Bring all your questions and concerns and have them answered by our panel as well as representatives from SAG. Panelists will include: Special Surprise Guest (Actor/Director), this award winning film, television, and stage actor has created some of the most memorable and challenging motion capture characters in films and video games. Gain insight in to his personal process of creating characters specifically for the medium of motion capture and how it differs from that of live-action roles. He will also share his experience working on the other side of the virtual camera as a video game director, having directed a very popular video game and currently in production on his second. It is a rare opportunity to learn from someone at the forefront of this technology and we are very excited to have him on this panel. Woody Schultz (Actor/Producer/Writer), was introduced to the world of performance capture when he was cast in Robert Zemeckis' pioneering film The POLAR EXPRESS. He went on to work with Zemeckis in two more motion capture films, MONSTER HOUSE and BEOWULF in which he played 11 different characters. He then moved on to AVATAR for director James Cameron performing both live action and motion capture characters for the hybrid film. His latest project was THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: SECRET OF THE UNICORN the first of a planned trilogy for directors/producers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. He recently ventured in to the video game arena with THE BOURNE CONSPIRACY. A member of The Motion Capture Society, Woody is writing a book for actors on motion capture performing, as well as developing a talk show and feature length comedy using motion capture technology. Adam Jennings (Actor), is a motion capture actor who has spent the last four years performing as the "face" of video game development company Neversoft Entertainment. Adam's facial expressions and lip-synching talents bring to life every speaking and singing character in each of the most recent Tony Hawk skateboarding games, the western epic GUN, and every title in the GUITAR HERO franchise since Legends of Rock. He has recorded movements for several thousand lines of dialogue, over 500 songs, and in 7 different languages, including German, French, Italian, and Native American Apache. Additionally, he will soon be creating alien characters on the big screen in Disney's MARS NEEDS MOMS, a mo-cap-driven movie which is set to release in 2010. Victoria Burrows (Casting), a partner at Burrows/Boland Casting, has been a casting director for nearly 25 years and has worked on major motion pictures such as THE LOVELY BONES, CASTAWAY, THE FRIGHTENERS, CONTACT, DEATH RACE, and RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION as well as such television shows as THE A-TEAM, MACGUYVER, 21 JUMP STREET, and WALKER: TEXAS RANGER. Thanks to her work with directors Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Peter Jackson she has also been at the forefront of motion capture casting on features such as THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, KING KONG, THE POLAR EXPRESS, MONSTER HOUSE, THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, and most recently A CHRISTMAS CAROL and MARS NEEDS MOMS. Demian Gordon, is the motion capture supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks and is currently working on Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Prior to ALICE , he served as supervisor of special projects for the film WATCHMEN. In addition, he oversaw all of the facial motion capture done on both HANCOCK and I AM LEGEND, and prior to that, completed work on BEOWULF, MONSTER HOUSE and THE POLAR EXPRESS . Gordon is in charge of Imageworks’ Next Generation Motion Capture Technology Group which implements improvements on motion capture technology to meet the demands of filmmakers. He was also lead motion capture supervisor on THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS and THE MATRIX RELOADED. During his time at Electronic Arts Canada he supplied all in-game motion capture for twelve EA Sports titles and was one of the founding members of the Electronic Arts worldwide motion capture studio which became one of the largest motion capture studios in the world. Gordon is also Chairman of the Motion Capture Society Board of Directors and a member of the Visual Effects Society. Jeff Swenty started working at an animation studio doing motion capture clean up work 9 years ago. After spending time working on a few children's CG shows he worked as the head of production at Motion Analysis Studios where he worked on dozens of games and headed the motion capture for I ROBOT, FANTASTIC FOUR, SKY CAPTAIN, CONSTANTINE, and several other films. For the past four years he's been the Cinematics Director for Neversoft Games working on top selling game titles such as TONY HAWK'S PRO SKATER series, the western themed GUN, and the GUITAR HERO video games, one of the biggest selling and most popular video game series in history.
